Prologue
Finding his way to the garden spade he kept in the back of his tool shed, as he did everyday, Kal hummed along with the chirping birds and other singing animals. "Today will be a splendid day!" Kal said to himself as he did everyday, And for the most part he was right. Nothing new would happen in his small corner of the Draven Wood. He would say good morning and give good greetings to all the folk that would pass his hut and his beautifully maintained garden, on their way to trade goods with one another. But what Kal didn’t know was on this fine morning there would be a new face seen in Draven Wood. Though at the time there was no way for him to have known it. That new face would forever change the life of Kal and all the Fair folk that called Draven Wood their home. ooo ooo ooo ooo With more strength than his tired and fatigued limbs allowed him to believe he had, Brylin picked himself up. thanks to the not so pin-point accuracy of long distance teleporting Brylin found himself tangled in a dry leafless very thorny bush. Thankfully the spells he cast over his son before he teleported them, protected his young child from any physical danger he might come across. While Brylin was forced to endure many small wounds from the bush, his new born child, whose name was Linkindel, was unharmed.
"Better me then you." Brylin said, as he winced while removing a thorn from a not so pleasant spot on his rear. Once the mage decided he could do no more to stop the minor pain in his legs and thighs, Brylin pulled off his traveling cloak and begin to fashion a make-shift harness for his child to ride in on his back. Satisfied that Linkindel was as safe as he could be in such a harsh land, Brylin gathered up what small healing items he had left and put them in the haversack on his hip, the bag made of dwarvish magic could hold many times the amount of items then the outside of the bag would lead you to believe it could. He picked up and cleaned of his newly acquired broadsword and slid it into its sheath on the opposite hip as the haversack. Leaning on his walking staff, a staff of no minor magic, Brylin shook off the last shock of pain from the fast healing wounds. He decided he would go to the one place he knew was safe. ooo ooo ooo ooo
As the old dwarf stood atop the massive hill full of jagged rocks and thorny leafless plants, he looked over his great wooden shield and saw the familiar face of a friend at the bottom. Before he could send down his scouts to escort the man to the top he felt an all to familiar tingle in his head from the amulet he wore around his neck. "Before Brylin reaches the gates of Shimmering Hall, you must know what it is he brings to your king to protect" Brinval, the old war captain of King Helegraths elite guard, knew the voice in his head to be that of Jayden Quee. Jayden, a women the age of twenty, too, wore an amulet around he neck, an item given to her by Brinval. The amulets aloud the two to magically speak with one another. "Are ye watching me again girl?" Brinval aloud more anger to seep out with his words then he would have liked, he hated to sound as gruff as his old frame looked, at least not to Jayden anyway. "Bah! I’m watching Brylin ye grouchy old dwarf." Jayden knew her friend meant no harm by what he said, and it was for that that she aloud him to "hear" her giggling. "Your friend, Brylin, has betrayed Lord Raydic, and carries with him the magical blade known as Seather, the same blade Raydic spent years imbuing with part of his life force and the soul of a mighty red dragon." "Ha! Is that it? We do not fear a pig that gets his jollies from bringing the dead back to life, if ye can call what them monsters are living." Brinval could not hold back a laugh, a laugh that sounded like that of boulders falling in a cave. "You laugh now good dwarf, but I assure you, Raydic, will stop at nothing to have Seather back in his hands and the head of Brylin on its point. I will send word when I find out about Lord Raydics revenge. Until then I must stay out of contact with you, I believe Nuami, Raydics under mage, senses that I am in league with you and King Helegraths Kingdom." "Listen here girly. If there is trouble ye better get yer bottom out of that blasted hole of a giants rear end and get back here to the Keep." "I will." With that the magical connection was lost. "Go and help our guest to reach the gates safely." From behind Brinval a younger dwarf gathered up his gear and begin to march down the deadly hill. It is only with a dwarven escort can someone reach the top of the Hill of Thrown Boulders without the magical defensive wards being set off and destroying anything they touch. ooo ooo ooo ooo
"Yer asking me to put all me kin at risk so that ye can take yer boy to his mother."
King Helegrath set on his great stonework chair built into the wall behind him. the kings seat was a dull grey color, that of the stone all around him, and like the stone in all Shimmering Hall, the chair, too had a sparkle about it. " I would understand if you did not want to take on such a charge my lord, and I only come to you with this because you are the only one in all this cursed world that I trust. I would not hold it against you if you chose to protect your kingdom." King Helegrath, Lord of all Shimmering Hall, stood from his seat with a huff and picked up his mighty flail from beside his throne and belted it to his hip. "Ye have never turned yer back on me and me kin so I wont be turnin mine." Helegrath walked over to his long time friend and put his hand on his shoulder. "Come with me to me and we can decided on a plan to get ye safely to the Draven Wood, and young Lin here to his mother." Standing from his minor seat next to Helegraths throne, Brylin stood a full three feet taller then the sturdy dwarf, however the mage never felt smaller due to the majestic nature of the great cleric king. "We will gather Brinval and a small group of his fighters to help us on our journey." With a nod Brylin said. "That’s a good idea, Brinval is a mighty warrior and an even better friend, he too should know what I have asked of you." Helegrath and Brylin walked to the great doors of Kings Hall, the doors opened and revealed Brinval already at the doors standing guard while running a wet stone across the blade of his war axe. Turning to face his king and at the same time putting his sharpening rock away and said "Do ye have need of me again me lord?" Helegrath walked past Brinval and said. "Gather two of yer best scouts and meet me in me chambers." ooo ooo ooo ooo
"You sent for me, Sir?" The lady mage stood just outside the door that led to the massive room that was Lord Raydic's personal library. Standing an inch below six feet and with long hair as dark as pitch, and a slender frame, Nuami was a strikingly beautiful women. "Yes I did, please, do come in." Lord Raydic set in front of his marble writing desk gathering spell components from one of its many drawers. looking up from his desk Raydic looked at Nuami and said. "Have you anything to report to me about the location of the trader and my sword?" As Nuami walked over to stand before her teacher and master, she noticed that he had adorned his Robe of Many Colors, a magical cloak that seemed to have an endless amount of pockets. its color was always changing, and could take on whatever color whoever was wearing it wanted it to be. "Sir, with all do respect we have not had enough time to pin point his exact location, but we can tell you that he went in the direction of The Grohst, he will most likely search for refuge with the blasted elves that live in the woods not far from the mighty bog." "Sir." Both wizard and under mage turned to regard the tall bearded man now standing where Nuami had just been standing. "What is it Aija? Have you word of where Brylin and my sword are located?" Raydic let more eagerness slip into his voice then he would have liked. "Yes master, the mage that Nuami had searching for the trader, reported that he is north of The Grohst, and heading to the Draven Wood. His wife, Coralyn, lives there. if he gets to her she, along with the other elves, can conceal him, and keep us from ever entering their forest." "How fast can you two be prepared to travel to the boarders of the elven woods?" Letting the question hang in the air and not looking for an answer Raydic stood to finish gathering the items he would need for the journey he would soon embark upon. Aija and Nuami both bowed and left the room to gather their equipment as well. Aija would be prepared before Nuami, Raydic knew, for aside from the magical gauntlets that he wore, he was no magic user and never carried more then a small ruck sack on his back. Looking out his window that faced the south, Raydic thought of all the things he would soon do to Brylin, the trader and thief. He would kill him and then animate his corpse and bring him to the brink of life just to kill him again. Oh the joys he would have with his once best friend. His face twisting in an inner rage Raydic begin to mutter to himself. "No one betrays me..." ooo ooo ooo ooo
Whistling along with the family of birds that had taken up living in the trees just outside his front door, Kal dug away in his garden ever cleaning out stray weeds and grass. Kal took care of his garden as if it were one of his children, for he was an elf. Elves, unlike all other creatures of the world worshiped no god or goddess, they found harmony with the earth and with all nature and animals. To Kal’s way of thinking, the garden was not one of his kids, it was quite the opposite, being an elf, he was a child of the earth itself. Suddenly, senescing that the birds had stopped chirping and singing, Kal stood to scan the area around his house, a cabin made of magically shaped trees and earth. Kal spotted a figure making its way threw the massive trees that lined the outer reaches of the Draven Wood. Though the elves were a calm and peaceful race, they were on the other hand, very protective of their ancient forest. Seeing now that the figure was in fact a dwarf, Kal knew he could see the figure well before the dwarf would see the elf. After quickly stepping into his house and gathering up his long bow and quiver of arrows, Kal rushed out into the forest to confront the trespasser. “Hold, or I will fire upon you. You have entered sacred land guarded by the elves that call it home.” The dwarf did not slow his pace. “ I send you only one more warning trespasser. Halt and identify yourself or I will fire.” Not slowing his steps at all the dwarf began to softly chant. Kal, seeing that the dwarf was not heeding his warning, shot an arrow lined up for the dwarfs neck. As the arrow zipped threw the air Kal had another arrow notched and ready before the first struck home. To Kal’s surprise the arrow never hit the dwarf, as the bolt slammed into the dwarfs neck, a brilliant white light erupted from around the dwarf and consumed the would be killing shot. With a booming voice made louder by some sort of magic the elf had never seen, the dwarf spoke. “ I am King Helegrath, Lord and ruler of The Shimmering Hall, I am here on behalf of a kin or yours, Coralyn and her spouse Brylin. Do not fire upon me again, I am a friend of the Elvish race, I mean no harm to you or this forest.” For some reason unknown to him, Kal found himself calmed by the booming voice. He put away his arrow and walked towards the newcomer to his forest. With the commotion and the sound of the magical defensive spell that Helegrath cast, there were now several more elves coming to stand behind Kal. Though most of the fair folk were lulled, one stood against the magical calming sound of Helegraths Gods voice summoned threw his own. “Kal, please be careful, we know not if he speaks the truth.” Sikefana ran up to stand beside his friend and fellow elf. Putting his hand to Skiesfanna’s chest to stop him, Kal turned to face his friend. “He speaks the truth, look.” Kal pointed to what the dwarf was holding. “He holds Linkindel, Coralyn’s young.” Following Kal’s finger Sikesfana and the rest of the Draven Wood Elves looked at the young child the dwarven king held. Walking up to the gathered elves Helegrath spoke. “Is there anywhere we can go to talk I have a bit of story to tell ye all and I’m afraid this story has a sad ending.” With tears streaking his blood covered dirty face King Helegrath handed the half elven child over to Kal.
